Title: Whatever happened to...?
Post by: Richey on 11. October 2018, 01:33:31
Well, we know E.K.Virtanen followed Peter Verhas over to Java...

But what happened to these other former members of bp.org that never made their way here...

If you know, let us know...add your own MIAs...I'll add more as I remember them...

Btw B+ I haven't forgotten the high/low game in C. I have a program written out but it has a bug and I haven't had time to fix it (I'm procrastinating doing this whilst preparing for a presentation at work tomorrow  ;D)

I remember a Synergy (spelling?) who was going to write a tutorial for SmallBASIC.

No hurry's with Hi Lo, I am not your teacher, I will give you a B+ now ;)

Go to facebook, and search for bluntaxebasic.  Name is Steve Arbayo.

I am wondering what cvirus is up to these days. I see him hanging out here allot but not posting.

Are you, cvirus, still with Java Script? (along with SdlBasic) or have you found another interesting pl?

If I remember correctly, Markus Hoffman (the author of X-11 Basic) was active on basicprogramming forum. His username was kollo. And AIR was always happy to talk Python and other languages.

... which doesn't make Peter a traitor of the BASIC cause: :)

That's correct, who on earth and where E.K.Virtanen is, I don't know or really care.

My message was not about "EK" but about the other subject in the sentence Peter Verhas, a well known language developer and not just a "varhas from GIT" whatever that's supposed to mean. I was just making people aware of him and his another first-class BASIC product just in case somebody, e.g. an "awerel from BP", might've missed it.

Hi Richey,

I remember a Synergy (spelling?) who was going to write a tutorial for SmallBASIC.

Are you referring to Syzygy? Yes, what happened to him?

...and eHitam (Aurel once called him 'Banna'  :o Whatever happened to him and his plans for Royal BASIC  ;D)

More blasts from the past when I remember them...

How about this...two for the price of one  ;D E K Virtanen interviewing SteveA

Mike ..i don't know why you talk about PVerhas because he was never be a member of bp.org

I saw Verhas mentioned and thought it would be worthwhile to note he's still a BASIC-er despite his having moved over to Java. OK I agree it was probably not the best thread to mention it but there's enough flood in almost every topic here, so I thought my very short message wouldn't be too much to spoil the overall picture. :)

Given that it's a thread about what's happened to former BASIC forum users and what they're up these days, I'd say your post was pretty much precisely on topic :)

Peter Verhas was a member there? I didn't know that. What was his username? I wonder if I had a fight with him one day.  ;D

Peter Verhas probably took one look at BP.org and converted to Java. ;D

E K Virtanen did many interviews with developers one with Galleon of QB64 fame that I am trying to find.

Here he is with challenge post:

Cybermonkey, who's that guy? ;D

Oh hey, Mystic Shadows, a name from before my time but pops up here and there under other names as I recall.

Oh the link is from here (non secured):

Dang! links to defunct QB64,net

Hey has someone taken over the name?

E. K. Virtanen was a great contributor to the BASIC world, but left a few years ago. I think he had no time anymore for programming. He was even some time the admin/owner of basicprogramming.org if I remember correctly.
Derek left also because of lack of time. He was one of the first contributors long before bp.org - there was a special forum dedicated to Yabasic where all began.

Yep. Without E. K. Virtanen, we wouldn't have this small BASIC community we still enjoy today (even, if it's much smaller now). When I entered BASIC world, he was an owner, admin and main contributor to basicprogramming forum, wiki and at least two more sites dedicated to retro stuff. He did a couple of interviews with BASIC developers and generally kept everything together. Two years after he quit, basicprogramming forum was no more. He was also developing a small retro BASIC interpreter. His contribution was far more important than that of Peter Verhas, who was just one of many developers and, let's be honest, not really important one. According to John, Peter Verhas decided to created ScriptBasic only because he was unaware of Python existence. Then he abandoned it, moved to Java and didn't really care what was going on with his interpreter. I'm pretty sure he's a brilliant programmer, but this "BASIC hero" status some users have granted him is completely out of proportion.

Derek left also because of lack of time. He was one of the first contributors long before bp.org - there was a special forum dedicated to Yabasic where all began.

Derek was the admin who banned me for requesting my account to be deleted. This I will remember forever.  ;D

True, but this is exactly what BASIC is supposed to be about. Even in 8-bit era BASIC was a toy language for beginners (or lamers). For serious things there was assembly language.
